Witvlei and Omitara Spay Days

This week we held the first ever spay days in the remote townships of Omitara and Witvlei and once again it became evident how much need there is for our services.  Even with no prior advertising or canvassing, within minutes of arriving in each location we were overrun by people wanting spay and neuter services for their pets.  Our funding is limited so we were not able to help every person.  We sterilised 27 animals in Omitara and 26 in Witvlei – so in just two days 53 more animals were helped.  Once again we were overwhelmed by the love and dedication the people had for their animals.  Those people towards the end of the list patiently waited for 5 hours for it to be their pet’s turn for sterilisation.  All owners waited with their pets in the wake-up area to make sure they were not scared when waking up in a strange place and carried them home when they were done.  Today we work in Gobabis with the Have-a-Heart Gobabis team.

A total of 20 sterilisations per spay day are covered by the Lafrenz Trust – but we could help more animals if additional funding was available.  We ask people to consider making a donation to Have-a-Heart Mobile to help these under-serviced and remote communities, it is very hard for us to turn people away who so badly need our help.

Dog Bite Prevention Week!

9th – 15th May is Dog Bite Prevention Week. We are already working with the younger community members by teaching them how to be safe around dogs. But did you know it is estimated 92 % of all dog bites are caused by male dogs, and that 94 % of these are not sterilised? Neutering a dog generally results in a calmer, less aggressive animal, that is ultimately less likely to bite.

Children are the future!

Education is really important to us, especially teaching children to become responsible, caring pet owners and to keep safe around animals. On our recent spay trip, we were able to use materials produced by Global Alliance for Rabies Control and printed by Maerua Printing & SIGNS to help teach children how to ‘Act like a tree’ around aggressive dogs in order to avoid getting bitten, and showing them the ‘Five Freedoms’ every animal deserves.

Hello world!

This is the official page of the ‘Have-a-Heart Mobile’ project – a new, exciting and much needed project that will allow us to provide free spay and neuter services to dogs and cats of low and no income families across Namibia in areas currently without veterinary services. Have-a-Heart is a registered non-profit organisation in Namibia (21/2014/0378) which aims to reduce stray animal populations in a sustainable and humane way, thus eliminating the need for mass euthanasia. Since starting in 2014, Have-a-Heart has grown to having teams working in nine towns across Namibia and has collectively sterilised over 3,500 animals (April 2017). Our key partner in this project is the Mobile Animal Care – Baines VetCare CC – a new, mobile clinic owned and run by Dr Ian Baines. The mobile clinic will be used on a monthly basis by Have-a-Heart.
